Have you a Diesel Fuel Storage facility?
Many large organisations have a top-up generator to ‘beef up’ their power supplies at critical moments, or a stand-by generator to provide power in the event of a power cut by the National Grid. Remember July 2006 when much of the West End of London was blacked out for hours?  If that happened to your company, what would it cost?

Have you had your fuel checked recently?
To supply your generator, you will have a storage tank containing diesel fuel or similar.  All such fuels deteriorate over time from a number of causes -see web page ‘Why is Fuel Polishing Necessary?’  If the fuel is not cleaned and conditioned regularly it can lead to unexpected breakdown of the generator due to blocked filters or loss of power.

Do you only test your generator for 30 minutes or one hour?
What would happen if it had to run for 6, or 12 or 24 hours - or more?
A serious power cut could last for more than a day. Would your generator run continuously? Or has your fuel got some contamination? If it has, the generator may well give up on you, just when it is needed most.

Have you had any generator breakdowns?
Fuel contamination will lead to generator failure. The most common cause will be clogged filters caused by the presence of bacterial growth, fungi/algae or water molecules resulting from a build-up of condensation. Have you considered all the costs which could result from such a breakdown - replacement fuel? – business continuity problems? – inability to trade? - loss of customer confidence?
